The People’s Fund of Maui is set to provide $1,200 in crypto donations per month to each resident affected by the fires in Maui.
In the wake of the catastrophic wildfires that engulfed Maui in early August 2023, leaving devastation in their wake, renowned A-list celebrities, Oprah Winfrey and Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock, have stepped forward to champion a crypto relief fund dedicated to helping the beleaguered Maui community. What makes this initiative truly unique is its embrace of crypto donations, opening a brand new mainstream avenue of crypto usage.
The Maui wildfires, which consumed over 2,500 acres, resulted in immense property damage and personal losses for residents of the picturesque Hawaiian island. In response to this dire situation, Oprah Winfrey and Dwayne Johnson have initiated the “People’s Fund of Maui,” an initiative aimed at providing direct and immediate financial support to those who have been deeply impacted by this calamity.
The fund welcomes contributions in both fiat and crypto donations, such as Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and Dogecoin (DOGE), among many others.
Oprah Winfrey, in explaining the philosophy behind the fund, emphasized the importance of empowering survivors to make decisions for their own recovery. The modus operandi of the fund accepting crypto donations was explained as-
“Every adult resident (18 and over) who lives in the affected area and was displaced by the wildfires in Lahaina and Kula is eligible to receive $1,200 per month to help them through this period of recovery. All net proceeds will go to those directly impacted in Maui.”
Celebrities like Jason Mamoa, Scheana Shay, Carlos, Alexa PenaVega and many others are also engaged in efforts to provide relief to the island.
Alongside the support from notable celebrities, relief organizations, such as All Hands and Hearts, have also been collecting fiat and crypto donations to aid the local residents impacted by the fires, further emphasizing the benefits of this particular kind of crypto usage. Olga Ruggiero, chief of organizational integration and events at All Hands and Hearts, acknowledged the significance of cryptocurrency contributions in providing vital assistance after such devastating events, highlighting the solidarity between the crypto industry and communities in need worldwide.
