Bitcoin education program in El Salvador gets updated

The Bitcoin education program in El Salvador, Mi Primer Bitcoin, is again in the news for its updated course that aims to spread crypto awareness in an open-source manner.

The El Salvador crypto space has been a prime example of a hub for the sector. The government has actively supported the El Salvador crypto sector, with a special focus on Bitcoin. As a result, Mi Primer Bitcoin, the country’s Bitcoin education program has been running successfully since 2021. The initiative took a new turn recently when it adopted an ‘open source’ approach for its program.

Experts and educators have collaborated on the project and provided input for the new open source version. The program covers various aspects of Bitcoin, including its history, use cases, and technicalities. Moreover, as the name ‘open source’ suggests, all materials for the new program are available publicly on GitHub.

This unique feature of the Bitcoin education program could likely provide a huge impetus to crypto awareness. John Dennehy, who heads Mi Primer Bitcoin, claimed one of their goals was to also spread financial literacy. Dennehy said once people become aware of Bitcoin, it could increase innovation, creativity, and long-term planning.

He stated, “We always strive to improve the content with each new edition, but alongside that, we have also built out much better infrastructure to allow people to best use this in their local context.” He went on to provide an instance where translations have improved from being ad hoc to having organized infrastructure for communication.

Dennehy noted that from nine translations earlier, 26 are ongoing. More than 25,000 students have graduated from the program, and the latest update could increase the number. In 2023, the program also partnered with the government’s education department to introduce the curriculum in El Salvador’s schools.
