Brazil to introduce blockchain IDs for its citizens

The country will completely revolutionize its citizens’ digital identity scope, focusing on blockchain IDs for their many benefits and use cases.

Brazil has announced a new National Identity Card project, focusing on digital identity. The move will enable blockchain IDs for its citizens, which will leverage a private blockchain. More than 200 million people in the country could benefit from the project and move towards a new phase for digital IDs.

Goiás, Paraná, and Rio de Janeiro will be the first states to implement the project. They will issue blockchain IDs on-chain in a move that would be historic for the South American nation. The national data processing service for Brazil, Serpro, has developed the private blockchain for the project.

The President of Serpro, Alexandre Amorim, said, “Blockchain technology plays a critical role in protecting personal data and preventing fraud, offering a more secure digital experience for Brazilian citizens. Utilizing the b-Cadastros blockchain platform significantly enhances the security and reliability of the National Identity Card project. “

The government in Brazil has stated several reasons for using blockchain for digital IDs. Tackling organized crime and streamlining government services and records are featured in the list of reasons. Amorim said data immutability was another reason why new IDs could be beneficial.

The official announcement also stated data exchange between government departments and the Federal Revenue will be more secure. The government stressed traceability, security, and independence while mentioning the advantages of states from this project.

From new benefits for crypto users in Brazil to CBDC pilots, the country is a step ahead in the crypto space.
