A major grocery chain in South Africa has decided to accept Bitcoin as payment from its customers.
Grocery chain ‘Pick n Pay’, one of the largest and most popular ones in South Africa, has taken a landmark decision as it has decided to accept Bitcoin as one of the modes of payment. Customers can directly pay for goods using crypto via their apps on their phone, or by simply scanning a QR code.
The grocery chain has been experimenting with this for several months, with the service being rolled out in 10 of their stores initially. Post successful completion of their project, the new payment system will be implemented in 39 stores now. South Africa was one of the first countries with a positive outlook towards crypto and this has helped boost crypto adoption in their country.
The Bitcoin Lightning network has been used for this to make it much cheaper and seamless than the main Bitcoin network. A small fee of 70 cents will be charged on each transaction and customers would be able to make smooth transactions via their phone. Pick n Pay plans to use this payment feature in all their stores eventually, which would prove to be a major point of progress in adopting crypto, for the country of South Africa and for the world as a whole.
