Further, according to reports, El Salvador also intends to open a Bitcoin office in Lugano.
The Swiss city of Lugano and El Salvador have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to jointly promote the use of Bitcoin and crypto in both their home countries and in surrounding nations and states.
El Salvador’s ambassador to the United States, Milena Mayorga, spoke at the Plan B Forum in Lugano on Friday, where she also disclosed that her nation is opening a “Bitcoin office” there with a new Honorary Consul to promote Bitcoin throughout the city, Italy, and Europe.
The first nation to accept Bitcoin as legal tender was El Salvador more than a year ago. Despite lacking such authority in Switzerland, Lugano initiated its Plan B initiative around seven months ago in an effort to increase Bitcoin usage in the 70,000-person city.
Later, Indira Kempis of Mexico, Prince Filip Karađorđević of Serbia, Director of Economic Promotion Pietro Poretti of Lugano, and former congressman and potential presidential contender Zury Rios of adjacent Guatemala joined Mayorga on stage via video link. Notably, Rios expressed interest in her nation possibly embracing Bitcoin but made no explicit policy commitments.
