El Salvador representative wears Bitcoin dress at Miss Universe

The contestant represented her country’s tryst with Bitcoin by wearing a Bitcoin-inspired dress at the Miss Universe pageant 2023.

El Salvador continued to be at the center of attraction for the adoption of Bitcoin as the country’s representative for Miss Universe 2023, Alejandra Guajardo, made heads turn with her costume highlighting Bitcoin. The dress, designed by Francisco Guerrero, featured an El Salvadorian coin, known as colón, attached to Alejandra’s back while she carried a rod with a Bitcoin clinging to its top. The coin was swarmed with cocoa beans, which also indicated bits of El Salvador’s history.

The announcer of Miss Universe said, “This look represents El Salvador’s history of currency.” The announcer further added, “For a long time, cocoa was used, and then the colón, until it was replaced by the U.S. dollar. In 2021, El Salvador became the first country in the world to use Bitcoin as legal tender. You don’t need a sash to walk around dressed as cash.” Guajardo also wrote in one of her Instagram post’s captions, “The evolution of the Salvadoran monetary system throughout all these years is a testament to the way Salvadorans have transformed their economy at different stages of their history.” She also tagged El Salvador President Nayib Bukele in that particular post.

El Salvador created history when it became the first country in the world to declare Bitcoin as a legal tender. Though the move received mixed reactions in their country, El Salvador has continued to promote the adoption of crypto and provide a regulatory environment to the industry in its country. The winner of the Miss Universe pageant 2023 will be crowned on January 15 in New Orleans, USA.
