‘Metaverse’ is one of top three contenders for Oxford Word of the Year

The announcement was recently made by the Oxford University Press.

In a very encouraging development for the crypto community, the Oxford University Press (OUP) has released a report announcing the word ‘metaverse’ as one of the three contenders to win the Oxford Word of the Year 2022. The OUP is the official publisher of the famed Oxford dictionary. This indicates a worldwide acceptance of crypto and its growing popularity.

The report states the meaning of metaverse as ‘A (hypothetical) virtual reality environment in which users interact with one another’s avatars and their surroundings in an immersive way, sometimes posited as a potential extension of or replacement for the internet, World Wide Web, social media, etc.’ The word metaverse also competes with two other words Goblin Mode and #IStandWith. The Oxford University Press would choose the winner through a vote by the public, which could be done through its social media profiles. The results of the poll will be announced on December 5.

Almost every major tech firm has started developing its own metaverse offering in the recent past. The term has found a place in common discussions in 2022, which is expected to increase exponentially in the near future. With more countries adopting crypto, blockchain and web3, and also forming strict rules for the same, the recent announcement by the OUP was a pleasant development.
